表面の胸元にはカール大帝のモノグラムを配置しました。
背面には、「紫色の頁の上に金色で刻まれた文字は天上の王国を、薔薇色の血を滴らせて得られる天の愉楽を約束する」で始まる、《ゴデスカルクの典礼用福音書抄本》の献呈詩の一部をあしらっています。《ゴデスカルクの典礼用福音書抄本》は、カール大帝がヒルデガルドの為に注文して781-783年頃に制作されたものです。巻末の献呈詩に残されたGodescalcという写字生の名から、今日ではこの名で呼ばれています。使われている書体はアンシャル体とカロリング小文字、冒頭のイニシアルAは、制作時期がほぼ同時期と考えられる別の詩編写本のイニシアルをアレンジしたものです。
